you have officially found my third blog, where i'm going to take on the identity of an epicurean, which means one who is dainty with their eating. i learned that word from reading roald dahl's 'matilda' when i was around 7, and i always thought it would be nice to be one.
except that i don't think anyone would describe me as particularly dainty in the kitchen. i tend to make messes. perhaps one could say i make epicurean messes? or maybe its fair to say i imagine myself to be dainty in my head. either way, its a pleasing sort of word to say. epicurean. epicurean.
anyway.
my goals for this blog (other than not distract myself too much from finishing the dissertation) are to basically document what i eat and continue honing my cooking skills while eating more healthful foods (most of the time - everyone should break for chocolate and like baked goods now and then). for the past few years i've basically been a vegetarian; meat has entered my plate only a few times a year and i occasionally eat fish, and i abstain both for health and ethical reasons. i eat many vegan meals and i have even been known to occasionally try something raw. i like to try a lot of new recipes, and they sometimes don't work out. i'll apologize in advance for my crappy camera. also, i love food blogs so i figured it was about time i attempt to start one of my own.
even though i'm new to this game and not officially signed up or anything, i know its october and therefore 'vegan mofo' (month of food) time. so, for dinner tonight i made isa's vegan 'tempeh helper' from the post punk kitchen blog.
it's probably been 15 years since a hamburger helper graced my belly, and i must say that i couldn't believe how accurate this version tasted - i found myself staring at the ingredients after i made it to verify that what was in it had nothing to do with fat and chemicals. and i don't usually go in for the vegan cheez, but i thought it worked really well here. i must say, the post punk kitchen has never let me down. i don't think i can legally copy the recipe, but i'll link you to the original page, and then follow with the pics. again, the colors are kind of dark brown, light brown and yellow brown, but you have to look past all that...
quinoa pasta and tempeh - what's not to like? note to self: the recipe called for "broth powder," an oxymoron if ever there was one. i'm positive that isa wasn't making this up and that i'm just ignorant, but i didn't feel like going to the store twice so i just used two of those veggie bouillon thingys that look disturbingly like starburst candies, and it worked out just fine, if i do say so myself. also, you'll note the absence of peas. this is because we had frozen baby limas, but they were in the freezer for too long and turned into a scary freezer burn creature and so i did without. this was sad as there was a lack of green in my life. promise to make up for this tomorrow.
look at this! a pot of vegan cheez! and it tasted great in this recipe! i never thought i'd see the day! extra exclamation point because i was able to make this pot next to the one above at the same time!
dinner - it was good. score!
